CoP to issue Hyderabad Call

Though there is no new protocol to be signed in the city, the CoP-11 conference decisions will be released under the headline of Outcome of Hyderabad. Subjects on the agenda of biosafety and biodiversity will be included. CBD executive secretary Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias said, “The decisions taken in Hyderabad on biodiversity will be brought out as Outcome of Hyderabad. And ‘Hyderabad Commitment to Ecosystem Restoration’ will be issued. There will be no new protocol. The main objective of CoP-11 is to promote ratification of the Nagoya Protocol.”

CBD In-situ and Ex-situ conservation programme officer Sarat Babu Gidda added, “Government of India along with agencies like United Nations Environment Programme, IUCN, Ramsar Convention, UN Convention on Climate Change and other bodies will be issued a document known as “Hyderabad Call” for concerted effort on restoration of degraded ecosystems. The call will be historic and Hyderabad’s name will be referred to in all future documents.” Mr Dias said, “Nagoya Protocol on Access Benefit Sharing is ratified by only six countries and 12 other countries, including India, are at a very advanced stage of ratifying them. By 2014 we are expecting it to come into force where 50 countries will ratify it.”
