Cops to enforce tinted glass ban
The city traffic police has decided to enforce the SC ban on the use of black films on vehicle windscreens. Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, C.V. Anand said the rule would be applicable to all vehicles from Sunday.
The SC in its ruling on April 27 had banned the use of black films of any visible light transmission (VLT) percentage or any other material on the front and rear windscreens and windows of all vehicles.
The Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 state that the glasses of windscreen and rear windows of vehicles should have a visual light transmission of 70 per cent. For side windows, it should be at least 50 per cent.
The police said that they would create awareness among drivers by distributing pamphlets carrying the SC order and the Central Motor Vehicle Rule 100 regarding safety glass and VLT transmission. The pamphlet will be published in Telugu, Urdu and English. The police will also launch a special drive against tinted glasses on October 25.
On exemption for VIP vehicles, Mr Anand said, “According to the SC ruling, in the cases of VIPs and VVIPs, who have been provided with Z & Z+ category, they can approach a committee consisting of the DGP, Commissioner of Police, and Home Secretary to get permission to use tinted glasses.” He added that permission will be given only for official cars.
On the special drive starting on October 25 Mr Anand said that the police would stop vehicles with tinted glasses and fine them and also remove the film. “If any vehicle is caught with tinted glasses, the fine would be Rs 500,” he said.
The police would use ‘Luxo meters’ soon to measure VLT, he added.
