CPI adds to TRS woes, decides to contest in T
After the Bharatiya Janata Party, another pro-Telangana Party, the Communist Party of India, is giving sleepless nights to the TRS leaders with its decision to contest the bypolls in Parkal.
The BJP, coasting home on the sympathy factor in Mahbubnagar recently, seems to have raised the CPI's hopes in the forthcoming byelection to Parkal in Warangal district, the only constituency in Telangana region going to the polls with the other 17 being in Seemandhra region. The seat fell vacant after Congress MLA Konda Surekha switched loyalties and joined the YSR Congress.
Though the CPI is not a member of Telangana Joint Action Committee, the party's national leadership is also fighting for statehood to Telangana. In fact, CPI state secretary K. Narayana is a vocal supporter of Telangana and has participated in various agitations. “We are planning to contesting the seat. The reason for byelections to six Assembly seats in Telangana recently is different from that in Parkal,” Mr Narayana said. The CPI's decision has thrown TRS leaders into a tizzy, as leaving the seat to the CPI could send "wrong signals” that the party kept off the polls due to its strong links with the YSR Congress. According to TRS insiders, a multi-cornered contest could swing any way, as seen in Mahbubnagar bypolls recently, where TRS nominee Ibrahim was defeated by the BJP's Srinivas Reddy, who used the Telangana plank to perfection.
