Cyber cops go global to nab offenders in net
Going global, cyber crime sleuths are increasingly using international legal channels such Interpol to nab cyber offenders. According to a top officer, the Cyber Crime Police of CID wing has sought Interpol’s assistance in five cases and issued Look-Out Circulars in 10 cases. Recently, the officer said, one such LOC helped them net a Nigerian national who had deceived several Indians through a sham online lottery. The accused was nabbed at New Delhi airport while leaving the country, thanks to the LOC issued by the city Cyber Crime Police.
According to officials, offenders behind the recent hacking of various state government department websites were also successfully traced to Algeria and Jakarta. “It is not difficult to get cyber offenders of Indian origin back (to India),” said additional SP (Cyber Crime, CID) U. Ram Mohan. “We have several legal channels, of which Interpol’s assistance is one. We seek their assistance to conduct probes abroad and get the accused repatriated.
In return, we extend assistance if required,” he said. Officials said hacking, online fraud, publishing of pornography, sending vulgar and offensive text messages through phone and emails, and posting obscene pictures on social working sites are among cyber crimes that are increasingly getting reported. The police have already sought Interpol’s assistance in connection with harassment of a woman from the state by a youngster from the UK and cases of recent hacking of government websites.
