Cyber cops run into FB ‘wall’

Most of the cases registered with the cyber crime police station in the city are related to the social networking site Facebook. However, a majority of these cases have remained unsolved since Facebook has not revealed any information about the offenders.

In all the cases, Facebook has only agreed to remove the offensive content. The cops have received more than 35 complaints in the last three months regarding Facebook entries. Sources said that when Facebook — whose India office is located in Hyderabad — is approached for Internet Protocol addresses of the offenders, there was always an inordinate delay.

Cyber crime police inspector G. Venkatesham said, “When a complaint is registered, we send a mail to Facebook asking for the IP address and other details of the offender. However, we do not get the information soon since it has to be processed from the US headquarters.” The complainants, however, are not satisfied with the response.

“They approach us with great anxiety to know who is responsible. Though Facebook removes the content immediately, most of them are disappointed that the offenders are not arrested. They also seem to believe that we are inactive about the case. In fact we are helpless due to the delay,” a cyber crime police source said.
