Cyberabad, a death zone
Driving in the Telangana region or the Cyberabad suburbs of the city, is reason enough to be extra-cautious on the road. Of the 25 most accident-prone areas identified in the state, five are in the city while 19 are in Telangana. Cyberabad seems to have earned the tag of “death zone” as about nine per cent of the accidents in the state in 2011 occurred here while also accounting for eight per cent of fatalities in road accidents.
The state government, on the directive of the ministry of road transport and highways, identified accident prone areas, called “black spots”, and highlighted 25 most dangerous among them. This was revealed in a reply to a question raised in Parliament by Anantapur MP A. Venkatarami Reddy and others on whether the Union government had asked all states to identify accident prone areas in their respective states. Dr Tushar Chaudhary, MoS, ministry of road transport and highways, said in a reply that black spots had been identified in 13 states which have the highest rate of accidents and fatalities in the country.
The black spots in Cyber-abad are Gagan Pahad, Kothapet crossroads, Uppal crossroads, Medchal and Miyapur. West Goda-vari, Kurnool, Medak and Nizamabad districts had three black spots each. Mr Venkatarami Reddy added, “They have given a partial list. The number of accident-prone areas furnished is very meagre. There are so many accidents taking place in the state.” B. Venkateswarulu, joint transport commissioner, department of transport, said preventive measures are being taken in all districts in the state.
