Docs blamed for boy’s death

Parents of a 10-year-old child, who died at Niloufer Hospital early on Thursday, lodged a complaint with the Nampally police alleging negligence by the hospital authorities. While the police is awaiting the post-mortem report, the hospital denied the allegation.

J. Nani from Hayathnagar, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday night with stomach pain. Tests were conducted on him and he was kept under observation and conservative management. However, he developed convulsions late on Wednesday and died of asphyxiation at around 2.30 am.

According to Nampally in-spector Ch Sridhar, Nani’s father Raghupati alleged negligence saying his child was kept in the general ward instead of the ICU and added that the attitude of the doctors was not good. “We’ve lodged a case of negligence under section 304-A of IPC. Once the post-mortem reports come, things will be clear,” Sridhar said.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities denied any negligence. A senior paediatric surgeon, requesting anonymity, said, “The child was kept in the ICU under conservative management. Ultrasou-nd and other tests were done. When he developed sto-mach pain again on Wednesday night, the duty doctors gave him painkillers. However, we instructed the attendants not to feed him as such patients are kept under NBM (nothing by mouth) to prevent vomiting and to keep them ready for surgery if required. However, attendants of other patients said they had seen Nani’s mother feed him at night.”

“The child, who had vomited and then collapsed, suffered fits at night and didn’t respond to resuscitation. However, there was no deficiency of service by the hospital,” the doctor added.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
