To ease fee burden, pass it on

In an attempt to reduce the fee hike burden on engineering students, the state government has devised a formula wherein the hiked amount will be passed on to the juniors equally for the next three years. This year, the fresh batch of students will have to bear the entire fee hike, which will be distributed to the juniors equally for the next three years. In this way, the fee will come down at least by 25 per cent every year for fresh batch of students till they complete the course in the fourth year.
The fee for engineering courses has been increased from Rs 31,000 per annum to Rs 35,000 this year in 578 colleges. The fees in other 67 colleges have been fixed from Rs 51,800 to Rs 1.05 lakh. However, the increased fees are applicable to only first year students who take admissions this year. The fees have been revised as the managements had sought hikes based on their infrastructure, implementation of AICTE pay scales to faculty and state government’s IX Pay Commission scales to non-teaching and other staff.
Though the same facilities and faculty are utilised for senior students i.e. second, third and fourth year students, the increased fee based on these parameters has been passed on to only those students who take admissions this year. The seniors will have to pay the old fee of Rs 31,000 till they complete the course. This has imposed a heavy financial burden on the fresh batch of students this year and the government wants to “rectify” it by passing the same on to the juniors for three years.
Senior officials of the higher education department informed that they were in the process of finalising the “formula” to lessen the fee hike burden on the fresh batch of students by passing the same on to juniors in the subsequent years and added that it would be notified soon.
