Eve teasing drives woman to suicide

A 19-year-old girl named V. Harika committed suicide on Sunday after she was allegedly eve teased by a youth at Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district.

Harika hanged herself to death at her house in Santhoshnagar, police said.

Tension mounted as the public and family members protested with her body demanding the immediate arrest of the youth, who teased her. The local MLA and police officers rushed to the spot and assured them immediate action.

Miryalaguda Inspector Y. Mukulaiah said the girl had been allegedly eve teased by a youth named B. Bhargav and his friends since the last two months.

“The girl’s father alleged that Bhargav harassed her through phone calls and SMS. She was worried over this,” Mr. Mukulaiah said.

Police said Harika was a B.Sc student at the Vyjayanthi College in Miryalaguda.

As Harka’s father V. Bikaham has lodged a complaint with the police about the incident. The Miryalaguda police has booked a case under section 306 of the Indian penal Code (IPC) for abetment to suicide.
