Fake encounters: No SC stay on promotion to state cops

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to issue an interim order to stay the promotions of senior AP police officers who are allegedly involved in 'fake encounters' in anti-Maoist operations, saying such an order could not be issued in an ad hoc manner.

“We don’t want to make such ad hoc orders,” the bench told the petitioner’s counsel, who wanted an interim stay on the AP government’s orders for promotion of police officers against whom allegations of “fake encounters” were un-der NHRC probe.

Counsel alleged that 19 encounters in the state were under the scanner of the NHRC and the rights body “prima facie” had held that at least 16 of them were fake.
