Floods recede, a lot left to clean
The flooding may have subsided, but the cleaning operation has just begun for residents in some parts of the city. Silt and waste from drains has accumulated in their homes and that needs to be cleaned, a job made all the more difficult by lack of water. Though the municipal authorities claim they are deploying workers to clear the silt, residents say they have never seen them in their colonies.
In water-flooded areas in the old city, especially Chandrayangutta and Bahadurpura, residents are still battling with the aftermath. Around 370 houses were affected in Chandrayan-gutta. Some are still waterlogged, others have silt and waste from drains that must be cleaned. Places like Krishna Reddy Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, Kranthinagar, Tumbanda, and Talabkatta are among the worse-hit areas in the old city. In Toli Chowki and Nadeem Colony, hundreds of homes were badly hit.
“The water has gone from our house, but we are not able to stay inside because of the stench from the accumulated mud and silt. We don’t have enough water to clean all this accumulated silt. Though municipal authorities are saying they are deploying people to clean up, they haven’t come here,” said Ashok from Krishna Reddy Nagar. GHMC South Zone zonal commissioner Ravi Kumar said a separate squad for sanitation has been created and has been provided with bleaching powder and other products to clean up the houses and premises.
