Freshers for T-stir stun cops
The Telangana protest march planned for September 30 is attracting freshers who have not been in the forefront of the agitation, according to the police. Activists who are facing criminal charges for taking part in the previous rounds of agitation are working in the background.
“We are seeing a second wave of new boys,” DGP (law and order) S.A. Huda told a press conference. “We have inputs that those involved in earlier agitations are not coming out.” Sources said that TRS and Congress leaders, including MPs and MLAs, are mobilising cadres behind the scenes for the march.
Asked how the police was dealing with this, Mr Huda, said, “We have kept our options open. It is possible that the leaders who were involved in previous cases will be arrested as a preventive measure.”
Till Wednesday, the attempt of ministers to get the march postponed didn’t bear fruit. TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao gave a statement in support of the march. With the date of the march closing in, the police has got down to preventing Telangana activists from entering the city. They found that youth carrying backpacks and bags and prepared to stay put for a few days have been entering the city over the past few days. The prevent this, the police has set up checkposts on the roads leading to the city on Monday.
At least 300 activists have been arrested in the Warangal region alone. In Nalgonda, a group of students travelling by bus to Hyderabad were detained at Bibinagar checkpost. Three more buses carrying students to Hyderabad were also stopped and checked. However, no details were given if any of them were detained.
