GHMC told to fine industries that pollute
A committee of corporators has recommended that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation levy hefty penalties on industries that are releasing their sewage into the storm water drain network of the civic body. The committee members inspected industrial areas in and around Sanathnagar, Fateh-nagar, Deen Dayal Nagar, Ferozguda, Navjeevan Nagar and Subhash Nagar and found that sewage from industrial units was being released straight into the GHMC’s storm water drains.
By doing this, industrial units are endangering the health of citizens, the committee said. The storm water drains, many of which are open, flow into water bodies at various places in the city on their way to the Musi river. It was mayor Majid Hussain who constituted the inspection committee after complaints were received that the sewage from the industries contained hazardous chemicals that were polluting city lakes such as Hussainsagar and the Musi river. The committee comprises Mohd. Mumtaz Ahmed, Shaik Shakeel Mohammed, Ale Jeethendra, Mohd. Ghouse Pasha, Mohd. Ayub Khan, M. Narsimha Yadav and Ratna Kumari G.M. The committee will submit its final report to the civic body’s standing committee in a week’s time.
