Ghulam Nabi Azad draws plan to handle Jagan
Outdone by Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress and Telugu Desam in the recent Assembly byelections, the Congress is preparing an extensive electioneering plan, involving state leaders across the board, for the upcoming bypolls to 18 Assembly and Nellore Lok Sabha seats.
Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, AICC general secretary and in-charge of party affairs in AP, devised the action plan after receiving several complaints, especially from party MPs, about “non-involvement” of party leaders in the last election’s strategy, according to sources close to the development.
Sources close to Mr Azad told this newspaper that the Congress high command has realised the need to involve all leaders for better coordination.
According to the plan, a seven- or eight-member special coordination committee will be appointed for each of the 18 Assembly and Nellore Lok Sabha seats by Saturday. Each panel will comprise one or two local ministers, one or two MPs, MLAs and PCC members, among others.
As part of the plan to drum up support for Congress, the panel members will tour their respective Assembly segments for five days between April 10 and 14. They will also visit at least four or five key villages in each mandal and assemble in Hyderabad on April 17.
The members will meet local Congress workers to know the “ground situation” vis-a-vis the strengths of the party as well as the government, implementation of programmes, and general suggestions on ways to improve the party’s and the government’s image. This will include suggestions of names for the bypolls, sources said.
Mr Azad will meet all the coordination panel members on April 7 and 17, along with members of the state-level panel, to finalise candidates and suggest corrective steps based on inputs given by the panels.
