Greyhounds cop ‘shoots’ himself
A Greyhounds commando allegedly shot himself to death with his AK-47 rifle at the quarters of the Greyhounds additional director general early on Wednesday. The deceased Abdul Nayeem, 32, was on guard duty at the quarters of the in-charge police commissioner, Mr Anurag Sharma. The police commissioner said it “is a 99 per cent suicide case.”
However, his relatives alleged it was a murder. Saifabad sub-inspector Ch. Sada Nagaraju said that it is yet to be established if it’s a case of suicide or accident. Nayeem’s engagement was scheduled on Sunday with his maternal uncle’s daughter. His body was seen lying a few feet away from his sentry post. Greyhounds sources said he was a tactical guard and such guards never stayed at their posts but move around to hit back in case of an ambush.
Officials said this was the first suicide case among the Greyhounds. “There is no work pressure as all Greyhounds get 15-day rest. They are also given 60 per cent additional salary as incentive and buy at 30 per cent discount from departmental stores.” Sources said the possibility of accidental firing cannot be ruled out. The AK-47 was in ‘single bullet’ firing mode when the incident took place. By mistake, the dead cop’s hand could have touched the trigger. The other guards on duty rushed to him when they heard the shot, but Nayeem was dead by then. His duty was from 3 am to 5 am. If the incident took place five minutes later, Nayeem might have escaped as a cop would have reached there at 4.45 am, said a Greyhounds officer. The incident took place at around 4.40 am.
Meanwhile, his relatives have alleged that it was a case of murder. “Nayeem knows no vices. He doesn’t smoke, drink or chew paan. Why should he commit suicide? It’s murder. Senior officials are involved in the incident,” alleged Saleem, a relative of Nayeem. He demanded a photo copy of the autopsy report that the cops refused. “I suspect they will change facts. If they don’t want to give it, let them seal it in public,” he demanded. “He doesn’t have family or personal problems. Why should he commit suicide?” asked Maisuddin, younger brother of Nayeem’s mom.
