HC orders extra MBBS seats for Telangana
The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Friday directed the Medical Council of India to grant a provisional sanction of 50 MMBS additional seats each to the Osmania Medical College and the Kakatiya Medical College.
Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy, hearing two writ petitions moved by the Osmania and Kakatiya colleges, granted separate interim orders.
The judge directed the principal secretary, medical and health department, to file separate undertakings before the MCI with regard to the Osmania and Kakatiya colleges on the basis that the principals of the colleges would remove all the defects which were pointed out by the MCI during its visit within one month from Friday.
The principal secretary was directed to file an undertaking within two days after which the MCI was directed to grant provisional sanction for 50 additional seats each to the colleges.
The judge found fault with the MCI’s decision, observing that the denial of additional seats to government-run colleges amounted to a denial of seats to poor persons having merit.
He said: “This would indirectly encourage wealthy students to approach private colleges for securing seats in medical courses.”
