Heritage site under threat from complex
A heritage monument and a Muslim graveyard have been damaged in the process of a commercial complex being built at Lakdikapul, Hyderabad. In his representation CM N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Mr Amjadullah Khan stated that Mirza Kusru Ali Baig and others had applied to the GHMC for permission to build a commercial complex close to a graveyard near Mumtaz Mansion at Lakdikapul in the city. Without obtaining the required permissions, the builders had started digging a cellar, which was in violation of the prescribed rules. The digginh had damaged most of the graves in the site, he claimed.
Aasman Mahal, a protected monument and a listed heritage structure, on whose premises the Mukarram Jah boys’ hostel is located, had been damaged by the deep digging done during night. The heritage stucture could come down entirely due to the impact, Mr Khan stated. Khan asked for a police picket to be posted at the site and cautioned that permission should not be given without a verification of the ULC plan. Mr Khan explained that the party concerned or the GHMC (town planning wing) ought to take a no-objection certificate from the Andhra Pradesh State Wakf Board (APSWB).
