House, Muslims call for ban on film
The state Assembly adopted a unanimous resolution requesting the Centre to ban the controversial film Innocence of Muslims, which led to violent protests across the world, even as Muslim religious leaders called for peace and restraint. The unanimous resolutions, passed separately by both the state Assem-bly and an umbrella of Muslim leaders, urged the Centre to ban the provocative movie, its trailer and other contents on the Internet and also enact legislation to stop such films that hurt religious sentiments.
The issue cropped up at the Business Advisory Committee meeting and the MIM reportedly mooted a resolution to be adopted. “There was unanimity on this resolution but not on other issues,” announced speaker N. Manohar in the Assembly. He read out the resolution, adopted by a voice vote. The Assembly requested the Centre to initiate immediate action to en-sure peace and preserve communal harmony.
Meanwhile, Muslim leaders also condemned the film, describing it as an attack not only on Islam, but also on the sensibilities of the entire world. BJP floor leader G. Kishan Reddy wanted a T-resolution to be passed in a similar manner, but there was no unanimity. The Speaker announced adoption of the resolution even as TRS MLAs raised the bogey of Telangana. Comments of MLAs of other parties were lost in the din.
