Hyderabad celebrates Bonalu festival with pomp
Amidst heavy police bandobust, Bonalu was celebrated on Sunday with a religious fervour in the old city, with a large number of devotees offering special prayers to goddess Mahankali, invoking abundant rains, good crops and prosperity.
While there was an intermittent drizzle throughout the day, Bonalu was obser-ved in several parts of the city, including Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Ameerpet, Begumpet and the surrounding municipalities, and the neighbouring Ranga Reddy and Medak districts on the last Sunday of the Ashada month.
People thronged the Mahankali temples from the morning, with women offering bonam to the mother goddess.
Endowment minister C. Ramachandraiah said on Sunday that the proposal to declare Bonalu as the state festival was under active consideration by the government.
