Hyderabad to run short of water

The city is looking at a shortage of at least 40 million gallons of drinking water supply during the coming summer.

The Water Board will be forced to reduce the duration of supply even in the core city during the summer as the reservoirs have not received sufficient inflows due to a poor monsoon.

This was revealed by Water Board managing director J. Syamala Rao at a media conference on Thursday.

However, he said this is not the first time that the city is facing a shortage of 40 MGD water during peak summer. “We will manage the water distribution by adjusting the duration of supply. Now, we are supplying 340 MGD per day.

However, we are not planning to revise water supply schedule from alternate day in core city to once in two or three days. Present supply schedule in terms of alternate day, once in two days and even once in five days in some areas in surrounding municipalities, will continue.

Only the duration of supply will be reduced,” he said.

Stating that the tenders for Krishna Phase-III works will be executed shortly, Mr Syamala Rao reiterated that the Water Board hopes to complete the project by December 2013, a deadline set by Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.
