I-T men carryout 'raids' on cine, TV artists
Income-tax officials visited the residences of Tollywood’s leading comedian Brahmanadam, TV anchors Jhansi, Suma, Udaya Bhanu and Omkar and singers Sunitha and Geeta Madhuri with 'survey warrants' on Thursday evening.
The I-T 'surveys' will be conducted on anticipation that the celebrities are not disclosing all their earnings from different sources.
Apart from remuneration from acting, anchoring and singing, celebrities have earnings from other sources like stage shows, endorsements, audio release functions etc.
Brahman-andam earns Rs 3L a day
“The sources of earnings of celebrities are unclear as they can be many,” said an Income-Tax department official who added that if any irregularities were found in the stars’ investments and earnings, full-fledged searches would be conducted.
During such surveys officials confine themselves only to earnings and investments in the current and previous financial years, whereas during searches they go into the record of the past six years also check details of investments of the individual’s family members and relatives.
According to sources in the film industry, Brahmanandam earns up to Rs 3 lakh per day and the small screen celebrities such as Udaya Bhanu, Jhansi and Suma earn about Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 per show or earn up to Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh a month.
Nearly 50 I-T officials conducted the survey on the seven celebrities from 3 pm till late evening on Thursday.
