I-T wing’s Rs 10K cr locked in cases
The income-tax department is under severe fiscal stress with Rs 10,000 crore locked up in various disputes, J.K. Hota, the chief commissioner of I-T, said on Friday.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr Hota said 1.40 lakh assessees are expected to file their I-T returns this year and added that only 40,000 cases out of 2.79 lakh returns filed last year are pending.
Answering a question on whether any defaults were found in the disproportionate assets cases against Jagan Mohan Reddy and Gali Janardhan Reddy, Mr Hota said assessment of their assets and income have been completed for some years and are under progress for other years. He also said some cases are under dispute and are in appeal before the I-T appellate authority.
About the refund fraud, Mr Hota said the I-T department has filed a case with police and a probe is on.
Since the inception of Ayakar Seva Kendra centres this month, the department has refunded money owed to 35,986 assessees, he said.
“For speedy receipt of returns, the department already operates 12 special counters for verification of preliminary details like PAN and assessing office code. Twelve more counters have been added for senior citizens, women and physically-challenged taxpayers,” Mr Hota said.
