Jagan in jail, YSRC suffers growth pangs
With the courts not giving bail to party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the YSR Congress is in a spot of bother over restructuring party units and deciding the future course in the aftermath of an impressive show in the byelections. According to YSRC leaders, there is a greater need than ever to rebuild the party organisation, as several leaders from other political parties have joined it. The question of giving more responsibilities to party MLAs also needs to be addressed, they added.
Insiders said whispers were beginning to grow louder within the party about the lack of mass programmes or drives to increase membership after the bypoll victories. Some leaders remarked that if Mr Reddy delegates power to his mother, YSRC honorary president Y.S. Vijayalakshmi, it would be easier for her to effect some changes in the party’s adm-inistration. But it seems there is a legal hurdle for him to delegate power, as he cannot then advance the argument that he should be granted bail on the ground he heads a political party.
“There is a need to strengthen party units. We also need to reconstitute the state committees by accommodating the new leaders (who have joined the YSRC) and MLAs,” admitted a top leader of the party’s core group. He also said there was a problem for the party taking diktats from Mr Reddy since that would be seen as running party affairs from jail. “If we don’t do it (take decisions in party affairs), who can authoritatively take decisions?” the YSRC leader asked. In this backdrop, Ms Vijayalakshmi is set to preside over a mega-meeting on July 6, with key members of the party’s various committees and other organisations, besides legislators attending.
