Job scheme impresses Suu Kyi
Burmese Opposition leader and MP Aung San Suu Kyi, who visited Papasanipalli village in Anantapur on Saturday, observed appreciatively how women and farm labourers had been benefited from NREGA and other schemes. “We can’t duplicate the progra-mmes, but they are most valuable examples for our country,” she said at a press conference held at the helipad.
While emphasising the economic empowerment of women, Ms Suu Kyi said that a country’s development was evident only through its women’s development.
She spent three hours at Papasanipalli, located on the AP-Karnataka border, interacting with the officials and beneficiaries. She was accompanied by Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh and Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy. They were received at the helipad near Kothula Gutta on Saturday by ministers N. Raghuveera Reddy and Sunitha Lakshma Reddy among other officials.
The CM, who announced a sop of Rs 10.20 crore for development of Papasa-nipalli, presented Ms Suu Kyi with silk textiles.
A power point presentation on rural development and NREGA programmes was presented to Ms Suu Kyi. Sowmya, social worker and director of social audit on NREGA, explained the steps taken to curb the misuse of funds allotted to the scheme and to have it reach the genuine beneficiaries.
