L&T kicks off work on city metro rail

Erection of pillars for the elevated metro rail project began on a grand note at Uppal on Thursday. With this, the Hyderabad Metro Rail project entered a crucial phase with the target of beginning first phase of metro rail operations by the end of 2014. Chief secretary Pankaj Dwivedi accompanied by managing director of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, N. V. S. Reddy, L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd, CEO and MD, V.B. Gadgil and other senior officials of various government departments performed the “Bhoomi pooja” at various metro rail locations in Uppal paving the way for stage-I works from Nagole to Mettuguda covering a distance of 8 km.

Mr Gadgil said that L&T has devised a construction strategy to complete the entire 71 km project in six phases within four years. The Bhoomi pooja was performed at three sites by casting of the via duct segment at Uppal precast yard, setting of the foundation of the workshop at Uppal depot and for a pier in front of the Survey of India office between the Nagole and Uppal stretch.

With an investment of over Rs 16,000 crore, the HMR project is among the largest PPP projects in the country, which is devised to decongest three dense corridors covering a stretch of about 71 km. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, was expected to lay the foundation stone for the project in March. However, this did not materialise for various reasons.

However, the Hyderabad Metro Rail officials are still optimistic of the Prime Minister laying the foundation for the project in future saying that the ‘Bhoomi pooja’ that was performed was to begin work along the corridor-III route from Nagole to Shilparamam spread over 27.5 km. As many as 23 metro rail stations will come up along this stretch. Corridor-I will be from the Miyapur to L.B. Nagar stretch spread over 28.87 km with 27 stations and Corridor-II will be from JBS-Falaknuma stretch spread over 14.78 km with 23 stations.

The stage-2 work from Miyapur to S.R. Nagar (11 km), stage-3 work from Mettuguda to Ameerpet (10 km), state-4 work from Ameerpet to Shilparamam (9.51 km), stage-5 work from S.R. Nagar to L.B. Nagar (17.87 km) and stage-6 work from Jubilee Bus Station to Falaknuma (14.78 km) will also be taken up simultaneously.

Stage-1: Nagole to Mettuguda (8 KM) December 2014
Stage-2: Miyapur to SR Nagar (11 KM) May 2015
Stage-3: Mettuguda to Ameerpet (10 KM) October 2015
Stage-4: Ameerpet to Shilparamam (9.51 KM) March 2016
Stage-5: SR Nagar to LB Nagar (17.87 KM) August 2016
Stage-6: JBS to Falaknuma (14.78 KM) December 2016
