Man impersonating IRS officer arrested
A man who posed as an Indian Revenue Service officer from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence to extort money from peoplewas arrested on Monday by the Commissioner’s task force, west zone team.
Police seized a Hyundai car, laptop, two cellphones, and a fake letter of Central Vigilance Commission of IRS from the accused, Karmuri Venkata Ratna Reddy, 36, of Guntur. Police said he tried to cheat film producers C. Kalyan and Singanamala Ramesh who had a financial dispute with the production firm Shalimar videos, by promising them to help win the case.
“He convinced them that he could influence senior judges in High Court to get the matter done,” said inspector S. Rama Chandra Reddy of North Zone Commissioner’s task force. Police said the accused was already arrested by SR Nagar police in 2009 for the same crime. He was also nabbed in a theft case in Guntur district the same year.
