The Election Commission on Saturday gave clean chit to TD president N. Chandrababu Naidu over his alleged 'religious remarks' made against YSR Congress president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in Tirupati during his bypoll campaign recently.

The complaint was lodged by the YSR Congress, which alleged that Mr Naidu tried to whip up religious and communal passions by dubbing Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy as an ‘atheist’ who had never visited Lord Venkateshwara’s temple for darshan and that he had high-handedly violated the traditions of TTD without signing the declaration of faith required in the case of non-Hindus. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal said, “We verified the CDs pertaining to this case and found that he (Naidu) had not made any religious comments in his election speech.”

Reacting to reports that Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy allegedly made religious remarks in Tirupati, saying that only Congress has the capacity to uphold the Tirumala temple's sanctity, Mr Bhanwar Lal said, “We will verify the CDs of his speech. The Chittoor collector has been asked to submit a report.”

TD: CM’s comments belated, amusing
Terming the Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy's criticism of YSR Congress president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and the YSR family as "belated", the Telugu Desam on Saturday questioned the motive behind the outbursts. “Was Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, who was Government Chief Whip, unware of YSR and Jagan’s misdeeds in the past? When YSR was in power, Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy backed him to the hilt. It's surprising that he was unaware of the crimes committed by them,” said TD politburo member Yanamala Ramakrishnudu.

Mr Ramakrishnudu said the Chief Minister defended Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy on his criminal links after the murder of Paritala Ravi. “Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy took 60 days to prepare a counter and came out with a statement in the Assembly giving a clean chit to Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy in the Paritala murder case. It’s amusing that the CM, who gave a clean chit in Assembly to Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy, now calls him criminal,” he said.
