Nims trauma centre in trauma
Over a fortnight since the April 1 tryst with handover, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences specialty hospital at Banjara Hills is yet to officially take over the new emergency trauma unit from the contractors. Significantly, civil work at the 200-bed Accident (Trauma) and Emergency Hospital was completed months ago, and the builders are learnt to be “keen” to hand it over.
But with the new blocks still not legally under its ambit, Nims authorities continue to refer cases to the old building’s 35-bed trauma centre, where between 40 and 50 cases are attended to every day. The result: Patients have to be quickly shifted to other departments as soon as they ‘stabilise’. The single operation theatre in the old building is also non-functional, and patients are wheeled to other departments for surgeries. This, even as the new block with six OTs lies unutilised.
To add to the ordeal, while the authorities bought a CT Scan machine after several months, there’s no room to install it. As a result, patients have no option but to go to private hospitals. “The builders are keen that Nims authorities take over the new hospital blocks, which were completed long ago,” a source in the hospital said, adding, “Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has written to the CM about taking over the block by Nims.”
While April 1 was scheduled for the formal handover, the source said patients would get better attention sooner the new blocks start functioning. With the CT Scan bought recently yet to be installed, as the room meant for it is undergoing renovation, Mr K. Suresh, relative of a patient, said, “I came here for a CT Scan six months ago but the facility wasn’t available here. When my relative came here for treatment on Monday, we again have to get it done from outside. It’s surprising how an institution like Nims operates without such a vital equipment even after months.”
