No T-brake, CoP venue peaceful
Even as the supporters of T-march thronged the heart of the city, the CoP-11 venue at Madhapur and other parts of the city remained peaceful, though the arriving delegates expressed concern about safety. The UN Department of Safety and Security Services took charge of the venue, Hyderabad International Convention Centre, before MoP-6, also scheduled to be held here, rigorously screening entrants. They have been following the Telangana march over the last two days, having discussed the issue with the state police to ensure that there is no trouble after the conference begins.
Ministry of forest and environment secretary T. Chattarjee said around 13,000 delegates have so far registered for CoP-11 and MoP-6. Delegates to the conference were aware of the Telangana march and while they felt safe walking on the road near their hotels, there is concern over the news of violence, he said. A German delegate qui-pped that the issue of their own safety have cropped up when they were here to discuss ‘biosafety,’ adding, “So far, everything is safe.”
A UN security official said, “Five teams from five different stations, including Nairobi, have arrived here. We are coordinating with the AP police.” Cyberabad commissioner of police D. Tirumala Rao and Sandeep Shandilya of IG Intelligence Security Wing held discussions with the UNDSS officials. Checkposts have been set up and fire engines positioned on various roads leading to the conference venue besides baggage scanners also in place.
