Organised theft hits industry units

A gang of thieves has stolen aluminium and copper wires worth Rs 1 crore from five manufacturing units around the city within the last one month. The serial thefts that have occurred for the first time in the last three decades have hit the manufacturing sector. While five industries have fallen victim to organised dacoity of copper and aluminium metals, representatives of the sector have announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh to anyone who gives clues that lead to the arrest of the gang.

The gang of roughly 15 to 20 thieves armed with guns and knives strikes at the industrial units located within the city and on the outskirts and transfers takes away the material in trucks. With the sector falling prey to theft, industrial organisations are complaining that there is no measures initiated for the security of the industrial sector. Among the industries which have been hit by the gang are DR Metals in Gaganphad, Tirupathi Metals in Kattedan, HVS Wires in Jeedimetla, Cubex Tubins in Patancheru and Varchika Wires in Nacharam.

These units have lost 20,500 kgs of aluminum and copper put together. In the latest theft which took place on June 6 at Vartika Wires in Nacharam the gang disconnected power supply between 6 pm and 10 pm following which production was stopped at the unit. “Subsequently the gang jumped into the manufacturing unit and held the workers at gun point and also manhandled them. Other members of the gang brought in the lorry and took away the metal,” explained Vaibhav Mutha, director of Vartika Wires.

“It is a growing concern for the industry as this is for the first time in over 30 years that an organised gang has hit the units in such a short span of time. There is a gradual decrease in safety and protection to the industries. the need for increased police patrolling is being felt,” FAPCCI senior vice-president, Devendra Surana told this correspondent.
