Organisers root for DJs for annual Bonalu bash
Youth representing various Mahankali temple committees in the old city on Tuesday asked the police for permission to get disco jockeys (DJs) to participate in the annual Ashada Jatara and Bonalu festival, and, in the same breath, made a plea for the procession not to start near Macca Masjid during Namaz timings. City police commissioner Anurag Sharma, remaining non-committal on both requests, advised committee members to carry on as before, having traditional instruments, like drum-beat bands. The police would be convening another meeting at the zonal level where, Mr Sharma said, they could try and convince him on the DJ issue.
The younger Bonalu organisers, in favour of having DJs, with their enhanced sound effects, sought to assure the police bosses in the city that there would be no trouble on account of them. “Like Holi loses its sheen without colours, song and dance are part and parcel of Bonalu. DJs are used only on the procession day. They sit in a huge vehicle and youth in the procession dance to their racy beats,” said Praveen Kumar Goud, vice-president of centralised procession committee of temples in the old city. As many as 1,122 processions are taken out during Bonalu, the police chief said, the police would continue to provide security.
