OU pass percentage at a five-year low
Osmania University has recorded a lower pass percentage in the degree exams. The results, announced on Wednesday, dipped by 7 per cent more than last year. Out of 62,000 students who appeared for the final exams for third year BA, B.Com and B.Sc courses, only 26,000 have passed, recording a pass percentage of just 42.87, the lowest in five years.
The poor results evoked protests from students, who alleged ‘faulty evaluation’ and demanded revaluation of answer scripts. OU Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Satyanarayana, who released the results, attributed the poor results to stringent evaluation methods and conducting exams with a ‘foolproof method’. The university had adopted a ‘liberal attitude’ to the conducting of the exams and evaluation of answer scripts over the last two years due to frequent disruptions to the academic activities in the OU region by the T-agitations.
During the 2011-12 academic year, with normalcy having returned, the university had brought more rigour to the processes. “We have taken all the measures to check copying and all other exam-related malpractices this year. The evaluation methods were also tightened to ensure quality. This may be the reason for decreased pass percentage,” the V-C said.
