Over 100 AP colleges set to hike fees

Parents and students are braced for a fresh round of fee hike in engineering, MBA and MCA colleges in the new academic year 2012-13. The hike is expected to be in the range of 5-20 per cent depending on the faculty and infrastructure offered by the colleges. The Eamcet and Icet counselling for admissions to the courses is yet to commence, even though there are indications that it will begin in the last week of July. For the first time, a college-wise fee structure will be implemented from this year unlike earlier when there was a common fee for all colleges.

The Admissions and Fee Regulatory Committee, which regulates admissions and fee structure in the colleges, has concluded the fee revision exercise for about 250 colleges, which submitted proposals for a fee hike for this year. However, the AFRC is in favour of increasing the fee only in 110 colleges, which have submitted financial statements. However, officials are clueless about the fee revision in the remaining colleges. “The AFRC has completed consultations with the college managements which submitted proposals for a fee revision. A report will be submitted to the government within a week,” said Professor Jayaprakash Rao, chairman, AP State Council of Higher Education.

At present, the fee for an engineering course is Rs 31,000 per annum for 70 per cent convenor quota (category-A) seats, and Rs 95,000 for 30 per cent management quota (category-B) seats. It is Rs 27,000 and Rs 78,000 respectively in the case of MBA/ MCA courses. However, the college managements are demanding a uniform fee for both convenor and management quota seats, as per the directions of the AP High Court.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
