Palvai to Kiran: Alter dam design
Member of Parliament Palvai Govardhan Reddy on Saturday asked the Chief Minister to immediately convene a meeting on the change of designs for the Polavaram project or he would file a complaint with the Centre. Speaking to the media here, the senior Congress leader said despite repeated objections from leaders of Telangana region and experts over the present design of the multipurpose Polavaram project, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has often issued statements that there would be no change in design.
He said Mr Reddy should be aware of objections raised by the upstream states, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, on submergence of their land as also Union environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan’s appeal to stop further construction of the project. The Congress MP also reminded the Chief Minister that the Union environment ministry has kept environmental clearance for the project on hold, with several objections having been raised.
Mr Govardhan Reddy said if the government decides to go ahead by finalising tenders for Polavaram Dam, he would convene a meeting of MPs from the Telangana region and take his complaint to the Manmohan Singh government at the Centre. He criticised the Chief Minister for ignoring concern raised against the project by public representatives from the region.
Quoting from expert committee reports and the one prepared by retired Engineer-in-Chief T. Hanumantha Rao, Mr Govardhan Reddy said Polavaram is not a sustainable project without a big dam on it. He also urged the CM to review the permit given to an Australian company to undertake the Dummugudem hydel power project with an outlay of Rs 2,000 crore to generate 368 MW.
