Parleys over, no T-decision: Azad
Maintaining that separate statehood to Telangana is a very sensitive issue to deal with, AICC general secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday said the process of consultation with state leaders of the Congress party has been completed.
However, a final decision is yet to be arrived at, as the party will now engage with leaders of other political parties of the three regions of the state — Telangana, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra.
Mr Azad appealed to the agitating Telangana MPs of all parties to show maturity and not to abdicate their legislative responsibility in Parliament. Mr Azad told reporters after a meeting of the Group of Ministers on media, “We have concluded our discussions with leaders of our party at all levels - MPs, legislators, senior party leaders belonging to all the three regions.”
Stating that “no final decision” has yet been taken on the issue, Mr Azad said the Congress might have to discuss at an appropriate time, the need to take into confidence and have a dialogue with other political parties. The Congress leader said he was hopeful that the pro-Telangana members of the Congress and other parties were aware that the first part of the Budget Session had not transacted business as desired.
Asked about disruptions of Parliamentary proceedings by pro-Telangana MPs, Mr Azad said in a democracy every member has the right to have his or her say inside Parliament. “But apart from raising issues, members also have the responsibility to make laws,” he said, adding that the Budget Session was the most important session of Parliament. The Congress had reportedly stepped up consultations on the Telangana issue and had sent minister for overseas Indians affairs Vayalar Ravi to AP as the party high command’s emissary.
