Poor checks make ORR a death trap

Without enough traffic surveillance and speed control measures the Outer Ring Road is turning out to be a death trap for commuters.
Even though Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, Cyberabad traffic police and other concerned authorities had decided to implement stringent measures to reduce the number of road accidents, including setting up of toll booths and deployment of traffic police at important points, nothing of any consequence has been done so far.
According to Cyberabad traffic police, the accident death toll in ORR under Cyberabad limits in the last month, including the three family members who died on Saturday, has risen to more than eight. Cyberabad traffic police is yet to deploy cops at important points on the ORR, HMDA hasn’t set up any of the promised toll management systems at the major points of the 85-km long road. Cyberabad traffic police officials said that they have been conducting special drives to curb accidents. However, they confessed that the paucity of police personnel hinders the deployment of sufficient cops in ORR.
Traffic police additional deputy commissioner of police P.Y. Giri said that there is a need of more manpower to resolve the issue. “We need at least 40 traffic cops more to cover the major points,” he said. Nevertheless, he added that the installation of toll management on the roads can be an effective measure to reduce the accidents. “If HMDA installs toll management systems, they can help traffic police in their mission in ORR,” he said.
