Power cuts hit small hospitals

Dr I. Abhilash, a junior doctor at Gandhi Hospital, said, “Power fluctuation is a major problem. In the cardiology department on Monday, we could conduct just three angiograms and the others were postponed. At least eight angiograms are conducted daily. Though we have generator back-ups for ventilators and for the emergency and OTs, they can’t support our power requirements for more than five to six hours at a stretch.”

Dr Rajendra Singh Saluja, state president of AP Private Nursing Homes Association (APNA), said, “It’s the smaller hospitals and nursing homes that are the worst hit due to the power cuts. Bigger hospitals at least have generator back-ups but the smaller ones have only one or two machines which are used for emergency cases.”

A doctor from a private hospital near Secunderabad station said, “Besides the three-hour scheduled power cuts, we now have at least one to two hours of unscheduled power failure too. Sometimes surgeries need to be postponed. All vital equipment is also affected.”
