Proposal for ‘Rock Park’ pops up again
The proposed ‘rock park’ at Fakhruddin Gutta, shelved ever since there was a plan to build a cooperative housing colony there, is now under consideration once again. The hillock in Khajaguda at Gachibowli was listed as a notified rock precinct by the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC) in 2006. Almost a year ago, the tourism department proposed to convert it into a National Rock and Adventure Park.
Meanwhile, the state government proposed to have a housing colony at the same spot, which was meant for retired IAS, IPS and IFS officers. This could have involved demolishing of the entire hillock.
“We have denied the No Objection Certificate for the housing colony, proposed by the state government, to come up near the heritage rock precincts. We have also directed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority to fence the area in order to protect the heritage precincts from further destruction and encroachments,” said an official from the Heritage Conservation Committee.
Frauke Quader, secretary, Society to Save Rocks, says, “The rocks in the hillock here are jumbled up in such a way that they form natural caves. The place is just ideal for bouldering. Now we will again remind the tourism department about their proposal to converting the hillock into a rock park.”
