Rare celestial event in June, next in 2117
In a rare celestial event, Venus, the planet of love, will transit the Sun on June 6. It will appear as a small spot slowly moving across the Sun, and people in AP and other parts of India can witness this spectacle with solar shade glasses immediately after sunrise.
The event can be seen between 5.42 am and 10.19 am in Hyderabad and other places across the state. Technically called the Transit of Venus, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The next transit will take place after 105 years, on December 11, 2117. City-based Planetary Society of India in association with AP State Council of Scien-ce and Technology has made special arrangements to enable people witness this rare event.
“We are holding a camp on June 6 and have imported special filter glasses from Germany. The transit should not be viewed with naked eyes. We can view it after sunrise which is at 5.42 am. It will go on till 10.19 am,” said N. Raghunandan Kumar, Planetary Society secretary. During the transit of Venus, the planet passes between Earth and the Sun. People can see Venus as a small spot passing slowly across the sun. This alignment had previously helped astronomers in measuring the size of the solar system.
