SC: What has state done on T-attack?
The Supreme Court on Tuesday pointedly asked the Andhra Pradesh government about the action it had taken against the lawyers who had indulged in alleged “hooliganism” inside the AP High Court during last year’s agitation for Telangana statehood.
Why should not the licences of such advocates be cancelled, the court asked. The query was put to senior advocate Venkataramani who appearing for the AP government by a bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and S.J, Mukhopadhya. The bench pointed out that the lawyers had indulged in such “illegal” activities at the very place from where they earn their bread and butter.
“What happened in the High Court during that period? What steps are taken against those who had taken the High Court to ransom? What action is taken against the members of the Bar, against the persons who are given licences to practice in the same court from where they earn their bread and butter,” the exasperated bench asked.
“Should not the (apex) court issue direction for cancellation of the licences of those advocates who had indulged in goondaism inside the High Court,” the bench asked. “If their licences are not cancelled, they will then threaten if the cases against them are not dropped, they (persons opposing them) will be beaten,” it said.
