Selective trial of colleges questioned
Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy of the AP High Court directed the principal secretary to higher education and the AP State Council for Higher Education to explain the criteria adopted by them for selecting only 90 colleges for inspection, excluding all other colleges that agreed to keeping the annual fee at Rs 35,000.
The judge was dealing with a petition by K. Manohar Nath, a student, complaining about the alleged arbitrary and unconstitutional action of the government authorities in not scrutinising the ‘B’ category admissions in all institutions and confining such inspections only to those colleges that have fixed annual fees over Rs 35,000 for ‘B’ category seats in engineering.
HC quashes criminal case
Justice K.C. Bhanu on Thursday quashed a criminal case against Prakash Reddy, accused in the death of Narasimha, a Dalit who was married to the sister of the Medchal mandal Congress president. The police showed Prakash Reddy as one of the conspirators in the killing of Narasimha and key in supplying explosives to the killers.
Orders on plea reserved
The AP High Court on Thursday reserved orders on a criminal revision petition by three senior bureaucrats of the state and Raheja Corporation and its representatives. The ACB registered a case against IAS officers B.P. Acharya, Ms Ratna Prabha and IPS officer Gopikrishna, Neel Raheja and Ravindernath of Raheja Corporation, and P.S. Murthy, joint secretary of IT department, for allegedly taking decisions against the interests of AP Industrial Infrastructure Cor-poration and in favour of Raheja Corporation in Raheja Mindspace.
Farmers’ plea dismissed
Justice R. Subhash Reddy of the AP High court on Thursday dismissed a petition by agriculturists of Kamparthi and other villages of Prakasam district. He made it clear that farmers whose lands were to be acquired for setting up a thermal power plant in Naguluppalapadu mandal, would be dispossessed only after APGenco got environmental clearances. The petitioners contended that the land was under the Lift Irrigation Scheme and the government had identified it for setting up the thermal power plant when there was dry government poramboke land nearby.
