Sewage water fills colony park

The colony park in Prashant Nagar at Miyapur is a glaring example of official apathy. Drainage lines of a large number of the surrounding houses are connected to an underground septic tank constructed inside the park. As on date, the park is a pool of sewage water. The septic tank under the park has outlived its utility and now drainage water is accumulating in the park surrounded by a boundary wall. There is no outlet or drainage for the sewage to flow out from the park.

“When it rains, the sewage overflows and enters the cellars and lifts (elevators) of our apartments. How can drainage lines or septic tanks be constructed in a park area? The flat owners are forced to keep windows and doors closed due to the stink. Flies are a nuisance during the day and mosquitoes at night. We have erected an iron mesh to prevent snakes entering into the apartment area. There are 320 families residing in 15 blocks here,” said G. D. Purnima, senior manager (facilities) of Aliens Elite Apartments, Miyapur

Residents of individual houses surrounding the park too said the stink, mosquitoes and flies are making their lives miserable. Women and children have stopped coming out of their homes after sunset as snakes roam freely. “More than the stray dogs, we are scared of snakes. The grass in the park has grown above waist level. The ground water is polluted here due to drainage water and leaking septic tank. I have been visiting the doctor for skin allergies. All we want from the government is to look upon us as human beings and fix the drainage problem,” said Ms Latha of Prashant Nagar. GHMC deputy executive engineer, Koteshwara Rao, admitted to the problem.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
