SHRC seeks probe on dumped bodies

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Saturday took a suo motu case following news reports about the discovery of mummified bodies of infants in Peddac-heruvu water tank in Mahbubnagar town.

The SHRC has called for a detailed inquiry into the incident to find out the culprits behind the act. The commission directed the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and the District Medical and Health Officer of Mahbubnagar to inquire into the matter and submit a report by July 12.

The commission had expressed shock and anxiety over the incident. SHRC secretary S.P. Ismail said the incident was shocking and inhuman. “It’s very unusual to dump human bodies in such a way. Since it appears to be a gross violation of human rights, the commission has decided to take it suo motu,” he said. The bodies of six male infants and body parts of three adults found dumped near the bushes on the Peddacheruvu tank bund had shocked locals on Friday.

Police said the bodies were dumped by the Mennonite Brethren Christian Medical College while cleaning up the building. The medical college was closed down in 1994, two years after it was inaugurated, since it couldn’t obtain recognition.
