State on alert as rain continues
The meteorological office has predicted heavy rainfall in Telangana districts on Monday, even as many parts of the state continued to receive incessant rains on Sunday. Hyderabad, however, got some respite from the downpour on Saturday that had thrown normal life out of gear. The south-west monsoon is active and with low pressure persisting in Chhattisgarh and neighbouring areas, rainfall is expected in North Coastal AP and heavy rainfall in Telangana on Monday.
CM N. Kiran Kumar Reddy directed district collectors to be on high alert and keep rescue and evacuation plans ready for low-lying areas. He wanted collectors to visit affected areas and take corrective steps including strengthening of bunds and preserving inflows in reservoirs and tanks. Alur in Rayalaseema received 9 cm of rain, the highest in the state, followed by Narayanapet and Sultanabad in Telangana and Gooty in Rayalaseema with 5 cm each. Many parts of AP got rainfall ranging from 1 cm to 4 cm.
Rains will recede after Monday evening due to weakening of the low pressure area, which is expected to resurface after July 26, when the state will again receive rains. Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed several parts of Adilabad causing inconvenience to people, especially candidates for Group II services posts who had to come to the district headquarters from various parts of the district. Rains brought cheer to farmers in Nizamabad, which has experienced incessant rains for the past two days. Agriculture operations for the present Kharif season, which had slowed down due to scanty rainfall, have picked up.
