State ‘gifted’ 88,492 acres in over 5 years

Between 2006 and 2011, the Congress government has virtually given away 88,492 acres of land, costing the exchequer thousands of crores.

This and other startling facts were revealed by the Comptroller and Auditor General which verified land allotments made by successive Congress governments in the five-year period.

“Alienation/allotment of land by the AP government during 2006-11 was characterised by grave irregularities, involving allotments in ad hoc, arbitrary and discretionary manners to private persons and entities at very low rates, without safeguarding the financial and socio-economic interests of the state,” the CAG said in its audit report for 2010-11, which was tabled in the Assembly on Thursday.

The report also highlighted issues like failure of Special Economic Zone promoters to create employment as promised, misuse or under-utilisation of land allotted to companies, violation of environmental regulations and illegal encroachments.

The 88,492 acres were allotted to 1027 beneficiaries over five years. The CAG took up 409 cases involving 50,000 acres for the audit.
