State shocks consumers with 40% power tariff hike
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday gave his consent to the AP Electricity Regulatory Co-mmission authorities to revise the power tariff fr-om April 1, which will put an additional burden of Rs 4,500 crore on consumers.
Tariff for almost all categories have, thus, been increased between 20 and 40 per cent.
The discoms had sought an estimated income of Rs 36,090 crore for 2012-2013 though a tariff hike of Rs 34,343 crores was permitted by the regulatory commission. Leaving a subsidy of Rs 5,358 crore, the discoms are expected to make an income of Rs 28,985 crore.
The tariff increase had been proposed due to substantial increase in revenue deficit as a result of increase in power purchase costs, network costs as well as costs of coal and gas (fuel surcharge).
Whi-le domestic consumers within the 0-50 units and 51-100 units category will be immune to the hike, most domestic consumers in the city fall within the 100 to 500 units range.
