State tells students: Follow Inter books
For better marks, the state government has asked Intermediate students to follow only those textbooks prescribed by the Board of Intermediate Education. The corporate colleges have been printing their own textbooks with an eye on securing ranks in competitive exams like IITJEE, AIEEE, Eamcet, AFMC, etc. and forcing students to follow them. The move has backfired this year, with the Inter Board framing questions purely from Inter Board textbooks, especially in the physics paper, resulting in a large number of students failing to pass in the subject.
The Board has made it clear that it will draw up similar question papers in future, along the lines of the physics paper. Secondary education minister K. Parthasarathy said that the aim was to discourage rote learning and test students’ understanding and analytical skills. He said: “It has been observed that students are coming to write the exams with a pre-determined mindset. The corporate colleges are following old question papers for 10 years. This year, we tried to change the format of the physics paper. Many students have failed.” Mr Parthasarathy stressed that from next year, the Centre would go in for single national common entrance tests at the 10+2 level for admissions to professional courses. This would start with Neet from next year, followed by Iseet later.
