Students stumble upon 3 new megalithic sites
The post graduate students of University of Hyderabad came across three new megalithic sites at Kistapuram near Gundala in Khammam district, during a workshop.
Apart from the discovery of over a hundred megaliths and one female anthropomorphic statue, the students also discovered monuments with features that have so far not been reported from this region.
Kistapuram is well known for megaliths with trimmed stone circles. But at the newly discovered site, one monument has a square enclosure, which is unique, said Prof. K.P. Rao, history department head.
Another important discovery is the rock engraving of a person holding a baby, in front of a dolmen.
In megalithic context, such figures have not been reported from any part of India, Prof. Rao said.
“Interestingly, the dolmen has a filling of material consisting of a high concentration of white quartz stones. Another first from this group of monuments is the carved lid on one of the stone sarcophaguses, which has not been reported so far,” he said.
The use of stone sarcophaguses is a special feature of this region. Except for a couple of stone sarcophaguses from Maharashtra, there is no report of any stone sarcophaguses from any place in India.
The site also has boulder dolmens, dolmens with cut blocks, and dolmenoid cists. Some of the dolmens just have a capstone elevate on two or three boulders — another rarity.
