Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy is CPI central chief

The newly-elected national general secretary of the Communist Party of India, Mr Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, said that unleashing mass struggles across the country, including statehood for Telangana, will be his top priority.

“Our priority is to streng-then the party, unleash struggle on mass issues, and work for Left unity and rea-lignment of political forces on programmes,” he said.

Mr Reddy, 70, who hails from Mahbubnagar, was elected general secretary at the CPI’s 21st Congress in Patna in Bihar on Saturday. He was the party’s deputy general secretary before his elevation, and replaces Mr A.B. Bardhan.

He is the second CPI leader from the state to hold the key post after Mr C. Rajeswara Rao.

Asked if he would give special attention to Andhra Pradesh where the party is yet to blossom, he replied in the affirmative. “We are carrying out mass agitations but the party has not been able to achieve a breakthrough in Andhra Pradesh,” he said.

He said the party national committee will meet in June to finalise agitations on land and water issues, irrigation projects, and anti-people policies of the Central and state governments.
