The state Crime Investigation Department on Saturday arrested the man it has been hunting for a long time, M. Bhanu Kiran, wanted for the murder of his own gangland boss Gangula Suryanarayana Reddy, alias Maddelacheruvu Suri, on January 3, 2011.

Bhanu Kiran was arrested in Zaheerabad on the Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka border, when he came to collect money from a contact. He has allegedly confessed that he killed Suri due to personal rivalry and because he feared he would be bumped off by Suri. Bhanu Kiran also allegedly confessed his links with Tollywood producers C. Kalyan and Singanamala Ramesh.

Suri, the man Bhanu Kiran murdered, was the key accused in the murder of former AP minister and Telugu Desam leader, Paritala Ravi. A Congressman, he was involved in several criminal cases in the faction-ridden Anantapur district, and inspired director Ram Gopal Varma to make the film Raktha Charitra. Bhanu Kiran was his close aide for several years and involved in the murders, extortions and land disputes Suri ordered.

The CID police seized a .32 revolver from Bhanu’s possession which they say he used to kill Suri. Tracing the rivalry between the two one-time co-criminals, the CID additional director general of police, Mr S.V. Ramana Murthy, said, “After Suri was released from jail, he got suspicious about the activities of Bhanu. He believed that Bhanu had siphoned off his money and properties when he was in jail. He threatened Bhanu and told him several times that his days were numbered. Suri abused Bhanu in front of other gang members. Due to this, Bhanu felt threatened and insulted. He thought he had to eliminate Suri for his own survival. Accordingly, he planned the murder.”

The police said Bhanu took the murder weapon from a private bodyguard, Manmohan Singh, who is also accused in the murder, collected Rs 4 lakh cash and had an escape plan ready.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
